St. Martha (the Dominator)

Saint martha

(Read about the general procedure for working with saints here.)

St. Martha, the sister of Lazarus (the one raised from the dead) and Mary (possibly Magdalen), is the patron saint of housewives, kitchen workers and hospitality workers and is known for her straightforward, down-to-earth manner. She is also famous for conquering a dragon (in a legend in which the three siblings travel to France after the death of Jesus; there Martha boldly subdues and ties up a dragon which has been tormenting a village so that the men can slay it).

Her traditional Catholic image often shows her wearing red, green and white robes, holding a flaming torch or aspergillum (holy water dispenser) and a Bible, and standing in front of the dragon.

In folk Catholicism she is particularly known for her power to control or dominate others, especially men (such as to keep a husband from straying); it is said she will only work for women, and will turn against men who petition her. She is often worked in this context using her traditional image, but sometimes also with an image known as  “Saint Martha the Dominator” – a kneeling dark skinned woman holding a serpent.

Petition for: dominating men, keeping a lover, dealing with troublesome people, developing inner strength, getting respect, just treatment of housewives, servants, and others in her patronage.
Feast day: July 29
Day of the week: Tuesdays
Colors: white, green, red
Symbols: snake or dragon, a torch, a bible
Offerings: green or white candle, water, sweet white wine, flowers, perfume (Florida Water)

Prayers:

++ Saint Martha, I resort to thy aid and protection. As proof of my affection and faith, I offer thee this light, which I shall burn every Tuesday. Comfort me in all my difficulties and through the great favors thou didst enjoy when the Savior was lodged in thy house, intercede for my family, that we be provided for in our necessities. I ask of thee, Saint Martha, to overcome all difficulties as thou didst overcome the dragon which thou hadst at thy feet. In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen ++

A Conjure prayer for domination:
++ Holy Virgin Martha, who entered the mountain and tied the up the beast with your ribbon, I beg you to tie up and dominate __________________. Holy Martha, hear me, help me for the love of God. Amen. ++
